Scoring Rubric

The student will begin in water that is overhead. The student may be holding on to a wall, flotation aid, or other stationary object, or they may be self-supported. If holding on to support, the student must independently let go of the support to begin the skill.

To begin the skill, the student must be in a vertical position in water that is overhead. If the student is supported by a wall, flotation aid, or other stationary object, they must independently let go of the support to begin the skill. While remaining in a vertical position, the student will turn their body at least 180º to face the direction of a safe exit or support. To complete the skill, the student only needs to demonstrate the ability to turn, they do not need to travel to the safe exit.

Exhibits any of the following:

❌ Does not maintain a vertical position

❌ Does not attempt to turn

✅ Maintains a vertical position

Exhibits any of the following:

❌ Attempts but unable to turn without assistance

✅ Maintains a vertical position

✅ Turns to face a different direction

Exhibits any of the following:

❌ Unable/does not orient themselves toward a safe exit

❌ Turns less than 180º

Performs all of the following:

✅ Maintains a vertical body position

✅ Turns at least 180º to orient towards a safe exit location
